Last May, the EU presented the REPowerEU plan. This plan sets out a series of measures to rapidly reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, fast forward the green transition and increase the resilience of the EU-wide energy system.

Within this context, the European Commission organized the EU Clusters Talk “Renewable Energies: How to accelerate technology uptake?” last week. In this talk, challenges and opportunities for the uptake of transformational technologies in the different renewable energy sectors were discussed.

The key takeaways

  1. In 2018 the European Battery Alliance was set up making Europe a global leader in sustainable battery production and use. In the upcoming months, the alliance will release a new framework to drive the development of mining in Europe and decrease dependency on foreign resources

  2. In Europe Geothermal energy is actively being used in the mainland. A great example is the city of Paris that uses geothermal energy to heat the homes of more than 2 million people. Building on this success, a European Geothermal Alliance will be set up to research and advance the practical applications as part of the European energy transition.

  3. In Flanders the infrastructure and transportation of energy is currently centralized around the harbors. To speed up the energy transition, a focus is being put on creating more decentralization. Upcoming heat networks will also be a big focus in this energy transition

  4. For most European clusters, the energy transition is urgent yet being slowed by regulatory issues on both European and local level. The European commission recognizes this as one of the biggest challenges to tackle in the nearby future
